The poster shows a booted leg pushing a spade into the soil, with the words “DIG FOR VICTORY” printed above the image. The design uses a red background, white text, and a simple photograph to make the message direct and easy to understand. The poster encouraged British civilians to grow food in gardens and allotments because German U-boats were attacking merchant shipping and reducing Britain’s food imports. By linking gardening with victory, the poster made everyday civilian work seem like an important part of the war effort.
