When addressing racial injustices, they often encountered violent retaliation. The movement included a boycott of certain companies that exclusively employed white people or kept segregated bathrooms. The aim of the protesters' peaceful actions, such as marches and sit-ins, was to garner enough arrests to fill the local jail. Police attacked protesters with dogs and high-pressure water hoses. Title A name given to the resource Chicago Freedom Movement Description An account of the resource The Chicago Open Housing Movement, also known as the Chicago Freedom Movement, was organized to protest racial disparities in employment and education, as well as housing segregation. The movement comprised a number of protests, marches, and boycotts to draw attention to the various problems that black Chicago citizens faced. King stated his intentions to join the Chicago Freedom Movement on January 7, 1966, and on August 5, 1966, he led a march through a predominantly white area near Marquette Park. Firecrackers, rocks, and bottles were thrown at the protesters. Title A name given to the resource Bloody Sunday Description An account of the resource On March 7, protesters from Selma and Marion engaged in a march from Selma, Alabama to the state capital in Montgomery, in response to a state trooper killing a demonstrator recently. John Lewis and Hosea Williams led the march while King was in Atlanta. The protesters crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma where they encountered a blockade of state police and municipal law enforcement led by Major John Cloud who gave the order for the marchers to leave. When they didn't, Cloud gave the command to move forward. The troops attacked the protesters with clubs and tear gas as cheering white spectators looked on.
