Throughout history, a lot of literature, specifically in the Western world, has minimal female protagonists that are defiant and strong. However, the famous play Antigone is about a young girl who sacrifices her life to honor her family and is inevitably killed. No matter what, Antigone does not show any signs of weakness and remains rebellious and courageous to the end. Even though many pieces of literature have male protagonists because of many patriarchal societies, it is important to consume literature from around the world with different female protagonists.
