This map and timeline indicate the locations and dates of the texts we have read in our Winter-Spring quarter Cultures and Ideas 1-2 course.

Included here are both assigned texts read by everyone in the course, as well as texts identified and located by individual students. Both the setting of the text and the home/publication site of its author are indicated, resulting in many cases in more than one location on the map for each text.

Green = Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie (2016, set in London, Pakistan, and Massachusetts)

Magenta: Antigone by Sophocles (set in Thebes, Greece, 441 BCE)

Orange = Hayy Ibn Yaqzan by Ibn Tufayl (1100s, southern Spain/northern Africa, set in Indian Ocean island)

Blue = Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi (2014, set in Baghdad)

Red = There There by Tommy Orange (2018, set in Oakland, CA, USA)

Purple = All the additional texts discovered by students as a result of their archival discovery projects.

To navigate the map scroll both right and left, and up and down. Our text range from the Arctic Circle to the south of Africa, and all around the globe.

Check out the timeline to see which texts were published and written when.
