loaded and the women proceed immediately to work in clearing away the small stones, erecting the tents, arranging the bowls, &c. When one family contemplate a removal, it is communicated to others of the same tribe, and if it meets their approbation, a day is fixed on, on which they all start within a few hours of each other, in the manner above described. The Arabs who inhabit the western deserts, are nearly six feet in height, and though well set are extremely lean; they are of swarthy complexions, having high cheek bones and aqueline noses rather prominent: lank cheeks, thin lips, and rounded chines; their eyes are black and sparking; their hair long, black, and very coarse, and the men clip theirs off to the length of two or three inches, and leave it sticking out in every direction from their head--the use of combs are unknown among them. They suffer their beards to grow to the length of ten or twelve inches. The Arabs seem formed by nature for the barren country which they inhabit, as they endure hunger, thirst, hardships and fatigues apparently better than any other people under heaven;--the only cloathing worn by the poorer class, is a piece of coarse cloth, made of camel’s hair, tied round their waists, hanging down to their knees; or a goat skin fastened about their necks and of a sufficienct length to cover their nakedness; the rich are however much better clad, they wear a garment of linen or cotton cloth over their shoulders to their knees, hanging like a frock without sleeves, in addi- |
