"Little Italy is a term applied to an ethnic enclave in a city populated by Italians or individuals of Italian descent. Little Italys developed in larger numbers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the number of Italian immigrants coming to America soared. Italian immigrants faced some difficulty in adjusting to America, in part because of the immigrants’ cultural differences and due to the local discrimination and negative stereotypes. They consequently, chose to live with other immigrants from their regions in Italy, forming their own neighborhoods as immigrants became more assimilated, however, they began to leave their ethnic enclaves. As a result, these enclaves were often taken over by newer immigrant groups. Many Little Italys still remain in diminished form as tourist attractions and local celebrations of Italian, American history and culture. There, visitors can find various shops selling Italian goods as well as Italian restaurants lining the streets, which also sometimes host festivals and parades" (Martone 25-26).
