Hill, Andrew P. Business Classroom in Commercial Building, 1890. Santa Clara.

Not only does this picture illustrate what Nicholas Pellerano studied in his time at Santa Clara College, but it also gives us an idea of what the buildings at Santa Clara University looked like in the 1890s. Even though it does not illustrate a whole lot about the Italian-American experience at Santa Clara, we still are able to see how students of all ethnicities learned and experienced their time at Santa Clara.

Library of Congress. “John Pierpont Morgan.” Britannica , 1902,

https://www.britannica.com/biography/J-P-Morgan/images-videos. Accessed 2022.

This image of J.P. Morgan gives us some insight into other bankers at the time of AP Giannini. This comes in useful to our paper when we take a look at some of the competitors of the Bank of Italy at the time. This image is important to our exhibit because it gives us a visual representation of J.P. Morgan to go along with his section in our essay.

McKay, Leonard. San Jose, CA Branch of AP Giannini's Bank of Italy. San Jose, 1907.

This primary source is relevant to our exhibit topic because it is a picture of the first Bank of Italy branch in San Jose. Not only is this relevant to AP Giannini and the upbringing of the Bank of Italy, but it is also relevant because it is located very close to our campus. This image and description gives us a better idea of what Giannini’s institutions looked like in the early 1900s, and where these banks were located.

  1. “A.P. Giannini, Famous Founder of Bank, Dies.” Madera Daily News-Tribune, 3 June 1949,
  2. 1–2.

In this primary source, it featured an excerpt informing the public about the death of A.P. Giannini and portrayed facts and stories about his life and success. This excerpt was useful to our research and theme because it praises Amadeo Peter Giannini for his legacy and the way in which he defined odds in order to become one of the greatest businessmen ever.  The excerpt seems to portray Giannini as an inspiring figure for the Madera citizens which only cements our argument of his legacy as a prominent model of Italian-American success.

Santa Clara College. Descriptive Catalogue of Santa Clara College. Santa Clara College, 1890.

This primary source gives us a list of all of the students that attended Santa Clara College in the 1890-1891 school year. In this list we see Nicholas Pellerano’s name along with many others. The catalog also includes some courses that students were taking at the time as well as other basic information regarding the school. We thought this was interesting because many of the classes the students were required to take are courses that are still relevant today. This shows us that even with advancements in technology and the progress of everyday life since the late 19th century, many lessons and topics are still relevant today.

Martone, Eric, editor. Italian Americans: The History and Culture of a People. ABC-CLIO, 2016.

This textbook gave us information about some of AP Giannini’s early life, but mostly about the starting work of the Bank of Italy. It explained how Giannini took a different approach to banking than most other banks at the time by giving loans and helping the immigrant and working-class of America.
