Treaty after Chernobyl

The treaty marked the first agreement between the two superpowers to reduce their nuclear arsenals, rather than simply limit their growth. It specifically required the elimination of all ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers.

The INF Treaty played a critical role in easing tensions during the Cold War and was considered a significant step toward ending the arms race. However, in 2019, both the U.S. and Russia formally withdrew from the treaty, citing alleged violations.
