A Collection of Voyages and Travels Vol. IV

View Fullscreen

An exhibit dedicated to mapping the voyages that Dr. John Francis Gemlli Careri describes in the third edition of the fourth volume of his "A Collection of Voyages and Travels," published in 1744. It also has a smaller mapped section for the history of ownership of the text.

The information chosen to be put into the country waypoints for this exhibit was based on whether or not Dr. Careri was in a contact zone, or had new information on the environment and its people to log.

How to Navigate the Exhibit:

The places mapped include pictures of illustrations and pull-outs done by Dr. Careri, and/or descriptions of contact with the native people of the land. The waypoints are shown in the order intended for the exhibit, starting with background information on Dr. Careri and the text.

Blue arrows denote the direction of the journey. Red arrows denote the direction of ownership.

After the 7th voyage waypoint, the rest of the waypoints mark the history of ownership that this edition of the text goes through, before landing at its current home in the Archives and Special Collections of the Santa Clara University Library. The last point is about the physical features of the book.

The timeline is a visualization of the periods of travel, as well as ownership of the text itself.
