This  interactive Neatline map illustrates the relationship between key landmarks around the charleston harbor, including Fort Wagner and Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter sat in the center of the entrance to the Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. The heavily defended stronghold was a key location for both Union and Confederate troops, throughout The Civil War. Fort Wagner can be located south of Fort Sumter, on Morris Island just outside of Charleston. Fort Wagner was a key position, and provided security to the entrance of the Charleston Harbor. Also visible on the map are the Union troops, sorrounding the fort.
