The Development of Pudong, Shanghai

View Fullscreen

For the second Neatline project my chosen theme is the development of Shanghai the last 20-30 years. I focused on the Pudong area, as it's urbanization has help make Shanghai into the futuristic city we see and think of today. Shanghai has seen an enormous amount of change in it's skyline in this time frame as these fascinating new buildings pop up every few years. Before the growth in recent decades, most of Pudong was rice fields, farmland, and humble residential areas--you wouldn't recognize it as Shanghai if you saw a picture of it then.

Between 1994 and 2015, there were what I believe to be seven unique key buildings that emerged in Pudong: Oriental Pearl TV Tower (1994), Jin Mao Tower (1999), World Finance Tower (2000), Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (2001), Bank of Shanghai Headquarters (2005), Shanghai World Financial Center (2008), and the Shanghai Tower (2015).

My Neatline will take you through these monuments, outline their features and importance, and paint a clear picture as to what Shanghai looks like now and where it will continue to go in the future. The emergence of these architectural marvels show what incredible things the city can (and will continue) to accomplish, as each building seems to improve on past by leaps and bounds.
