Misunderstood and Controversial Characters Throughout Literature

By Monique Covarrubias

Hello everyone! My name is Monique Covarrubias and I am a student at Santa Clara University and this is my fall Cultres & Ideas Fall Final Project. The instructions for this project was to think of a topic that relates to one of the four different texts [Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, Antigone translated by Seamus Heaney, Hayy Ibn Yaqzan by Ibn Tufayl, and There There by Tommy Orange] we read in class this quarter and do independent research to find four other texts we have not read based on our topic . My neatline stems from my home text Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie in which I was inspired to do research on the topic of misunderstood or controversial characters throughout both history and geographical location.

I tried to find novels or comic books that varied geographically so that you will be able to travel through different places and times. In term of navigation, I suggest starting with the Home Fire waypoint and then either picking on a specific color dot that perhaps you find fascinating right away or going down, from top to bottom, the different waypoints.

As a legend:

The blue dot consits of some general information about my home text Home Fire by Kamilia Shamsie.

The green dot corresponds to anything related to Natalie Davis' novel The Return of Martin Guerre.

The red dot corresponds to anything related to The Ramayana by Valmiki

The purple dot corresponds to anything related to the character Akokhan in Akokhan: More than a Comic Story by Frank Odoi

The orange dot correspond to anything related to Gollum from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
