The characters in Pachinko are representative of the sociopolitical implications of the relationship between Japan and Korea throughout history, and thus this novel provides readers with a deeper insight into the nuances of this relationship between these two countries throughout the 20th century.
This Neatline exhibit provides historical context to Pachinko, explaining how Japan's complex history and colonization of Korea affected the characters in the novel. The exhibit also has records expanding upon each characters' experiences in different parts of Korea and Japan. The waypoints on the map represent different characters' experiences in different geographical locations – each point is a record, so it is interactive (click for more info!). Additionally, there are red time periods on the timeline representing informational records on Japanese history (again – click on them for more info!).
