As this document explains, Santa Clara University decided to discontinue its team because the school did not have the money to sustain the program at its current level. The cut of the team saved the school over 3 million dollars, and that money would be used to develop other parts of the university's foundation. This move was also neccessary because the league Santa Clara wanted to compete in was increasingly getting better. For the football team to continue perfroming at a high level, more money would be needed in the football program. The budget deficit during the early 1900s made it impractical to conintue funding the expensive team, so the decision was made to cancel football activites altogether and use the excess money towards other sports and more practical educational uses.
