Conclusion

The Chōsen Shinpō, originally published in 1881, shows a disturbing lack of Korean voice in Korea as articles within the paper are dominated by Chinese and Japanese voices. These Japanese voices even go so far as to talk down upon Koreans in a very public manner. The Hansong Sunbo/ Seoul News, originally published in 1883, shows a progression of Korean voice from the previous paper with articles featured in Korean. Furthermore, this paper was printed on the same press that printed Korean translations of popular English books which shows a greater emphasis on Korean self-education and possibly empowerment. Finally, The Dongnipsinmun (The Independent), originally published in 1896, serves as a landmark in Korean independence from foreign bodies as it is the first newspaper in Korea to be published entirely in Korean. In all, these three newspapers show a progression in the freedom of expression experienced by Koreans from 1881 to 1896.
