Description
Executive Order 6102, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 5, 1933, prohibited the hoarding of gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates within the United States. The order required individuals and institutions to turn in most of their gold to the Federal Reserve in exchange for paper currency. This policy aimed to stabilize the banking system and allow the federal government to expand the money supply during the Great Depression, addressing deflation and restoring economic activity.
