President McCoy, the president at the time, immediately announced plans to rebuild the church and surrounding area as quickly as possible. Within two weeks of the fire, the president met in San Francisco with a committee of alumni and concerned citizens to organize a fund drive to restore the destroyed landmark. The motto of the restoration campaign was “As it was originally–so it will be”. While some authentic elements of mission art and architecture were incorporated into the reconstruction, the result was a less than perfect restoration.
