Bibliography

“Assolti.” L’Italia, 20 Aug. 1902, p. 5.

  • This is one of two L’Italia articles in which Gino Sbrana was mentioned as a participant in a brawl.

Bowden Jr., Carlos. Italians of the Bay Area: The Photographs of Gino Sbrana. Arcadia, 2006.

  • This was my most significant source for my project. This book is the only reliable published source with lots of information about Sbrana’s life, and contains the firsthand account of the discovery of Sbrana’s photos. Additionally, it is the source for all Sbrana photos featured in the exhibit.

Drawing advertisement. L’Italia, 31 Aug. 1913, p. 31.

  • This is an advertisement in L’Italia for drawing lessons offered by Professor Carlo Sbrana.

Italiae Polytechnicum advertisement. L’Italia, 11 Aug. 1913, p. 2.

  • This advertisement is significant to my research because it tells how long Carlo Sbrana had been a professor at Santa Clara–8 years at this time.

“Italian Festa.” The San Francisco Examiner, Oct. 4 1992, p. 207.

  • This is a notice in the SF Examiner describing an Italian festa in San Francisco, where some of Sbrana’s photos would be on display.

Laurino, Maria. The Italian Americans: A History. Available from: Yuzu, W. W. Norton, 2014.

  • Our textbook for the course provided good background information on Italian immigration that I used to get a sense for the context of my story. In particular, I cited a statistic regarding the time period when Sbrana and his family immigrated from Italy to the United States.

Masullo, Robert A. “Immigrant Images.” The Sacramento Bee, 9 Apr. 1989, p. 50.

  • This is a fairly lengthy article that ran in the Sacramento Bee that advertises a Museo Italo Americano exhibit of Sbrana’s photos titled “Chi erano?” The author contextualizes the exhibit well, and makes a note about hopes that visitors to the exhibit may recognize relatives in Sbrana’s photos shown at the exhibit.

“Nozze d’Argento.” L’Italia, 31 Dec. 1908, p. 8.

  • This article is only significant as the final mention of Gino Sbrana in L’Italia.

“Pel Rimpatrio di un Connazionale.” L’Italia, 20 Oct. 1902, p. 5.

  • This article from L’Italia is one of four mentions of Sbrana in the archived history of the paper. He was mentioned for donating to a fund being used to repatriate a sick member of the Bay Area’s Italian community.

“Rissa Fra Italiani.” L’Italia, 14 Aug. 1902, p. 5.

  • This is the first–and longest–of two L’Italia articles in which Gino Sbrana was mentioned as a participant in a brawl.

“Threatening Letter Sent to Judge Troutt.” The San Francisco Examiner, 1913 Sept. 20, p. 5.

  • This article is significant to my research because it refers to Carlo Sbrana as a “former” professor, meaning that his time at the University of Santa Clara had come to an end sometime in 1913 or earlier.
