Wine Industry

Italian family harvesting grapes in Sonoma, California

A sub sector of labor contribution by Italian immigrants was in the wine industry specifically in developing California’s wine industry. They arguably contributed more than anyone. While they faced challenges due to prohibition and fluctuating market demands, many Italian American vintners advocated for better regulations and standards, thereby promoting industry reforms. Their contributions also helped shape labor practices within vineyards and wine making facilities, additionally contributing to the exports of local wine all around the nation.

Italian families would work constantly on the vineyard, trying to maintain good quality grapes. Working long hours in the vineyard in the hot sun.

Working on the vineyards was something that often reminded them of home. Italians were great with agricultural work and often grew food that they would then sell in the local market.
