Adenji’s The Personal and the Collective: How Three Generations of the Billionaire

Sobrato Family Give gives insight into individual family members’ roles in the Sobrato Family Foundation. The article was particularly helpful in finding information on John A.’s grandson, John Mathew Sobrato, who works hands-on with the recipients of John A. Sobrato’s Philanthropy.

Lloyd’s San Jose Legends: John Sobrato's Generosity Is Everywhere provides a brief summary of Sobrato’s real estate career and specific examples of his charity work, including specific San Francisco Bay Area hospitals and schools, such as Lucile Packard Hospital. The article touches on how Sobrato’s Catholic values motivate his philanthropy, which gave me ideas for my section titled “Jesuit Values” on my digital exhibit.

This speech on YouTube includes an introductory speech given by a friend of Sobrato for Sobrato and then a speech by Sobrato. The introductory speech details many facts about Sorbato’s personal life, while Sobrato’s speech provides information on his career and his family. This speech from YouTube was the source of many images and important information on John A. Sobrato’s early life and career. Many of the newspaper article headlines in my images were from this source, given with little context; nothing would come up with a reverse image search on these images either. This was likely because Sobrato supplied them for the slideshow, as he attended the event where it was played. Due to this circumstance, there is limited metadata on photos from this source; regardless, the images were still very relevant, useful, and good quality.

Baliva, Zach (Director), Potentially Dangerous, 3 Oct. 2017.

In Baliva’s documentary Potentially Dangerous, about Italian American discrimination and persecution during World War 2, Italian American DiStasi details his father’s unjust internment during WW2. This documentary was useful for describing Italian American discrimination during the WW2 period. A primary source, DiStasi’s interned father’s letter, was also included in the documentary, which provided a credible imbedded source.

Fichera, Sebastian. "Sebastian Fichera, Italy on the Pacific: San Francisco's Italian Americans."

The source is a great comprehensive book about the history of Italian Americans on the American Pacific Coast. I found this source because it was quoted in another source. Fichera’s Italy on the Pacific: San Francisco's Italian Americans was too long to fully read (>200 pages), but it was nonetheless useful in that there was a quotation in it that directly proved a quote that supported the historical fact that northern Italians in the San Francisco Bay Area wanted to manage southern Italians so to protect the overall image of Italian Americans in the SF Bay Area. This was brought up in Norelli’s documentary. However, I did not find a quote I wanted from Norelli, so I instead used this Fichera’s work.

Norelli, Gianfranco, director. Italian-Americans in California. Produced by Gianfranco Norelli

and Suma Kurien, Eurus Productions, 2014. Alexander Street, https://video.alexanderstreet.com/watch/italian-americans-in-california.

Norelli’s Italian-Americans in California was one the most useful sources out of them all. The documentary provides an intensive history of Italians and Italian Americans in California and the West Coast. The documentary mainly covers Italians and Italian Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area, but also L.A. and San Diego as well. The documentary includes plenty of historical events, stories, names, etc., regarding Italians and Italian Americans in California, all backed by historians and academics like Gabacia and Paola Sensi-Isolani. The documentary especially helped me in the second part of my project because I needed to fit Sobrato’s life in the context of the Italian American experience in California – Norelli’s comprehensive history of Italian Americans in California provided not only a good understanding but also many good quotes from credible figures on Italian American history.

Joint Venture Silicon Valley. "Meet John Sobrato, Sobrato Organization." Jointventure.org,

jointventure.org/read-more-profiles/138-meet-john-sobrato. Accessed 14 Mar. 2024.

This is a profile of John Sobrato on the website of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, one of the main philanthropic communities he is part of. The profile provided many general facts about Sobrato’s early life and career and his present philanthropic ventures. The source was particularly useful for finding the roles of different Sobrato family members in the Sobrato Family Foundation, such as John Matthew, Lisa, and John Michael Sobrato.

Laurino, Maria. The Italian Americans: A History. W. W. Norton & Company, 1 Dec. 2014.

Laurino’s The Italian Americans: A History is a book that details Italian American history all the way from pre-Rigorsimento to modern times. Laurino’s The Italian Americans: A History was a good source to review for certain facts and core concepts of Italian American history. I Luarino’s work primarily to help cover the treatment of Italian Americans in other parts of the U.S. than the West Coast to compare other regions with the West Coast. Laurino’s work was especially useful because McKevitt, Baliva, and Norelli only brought up the West Coast Italian American experience, leaving out other U.S. regions.

McKevitt’s Brokers of Culture: Italian Jesuits in the American West, 1848-1919 is a book about the influence of Jesuits in the American West during and after their expulsion from Italy. I primarily used Chapter 9, the chapter about early Jesuit schools in the American West, which contextualized Sobrato’s “Jesuit” education. The book was especially useful because it included much history on SCU, Sobrato’s higher education and the recipient of many of his hefty donations (e.g. SCDI). I also reviewed the chapter about Jesuit expulsion from Italy. However, I found no relevant quotes in it for my exhibit.

This interview is 40 minutes long and covers a wide variety of topics pertaining to John Sobrato, such as his education, philanthropic goals, core values, and more. An introductory speech and slideshow precede the interview. This 40-minute YouTube interview with John A. Sobrato done by Philanthropy Roundtable was especially helpful in the beginning section of my project, where I argue that Sobrato’s work reflects Italian American values because he makes sure to involve his family and his work and philanthropy and instills in them Jesuit values. In the interview, he talked about his Catholic and Jesuit values in great detail, especially his efforts trying to instill them in the future generations of his family.

Mori’s Life for Women in Italy: From World War I to Today! aids in understanding the Italian American experience by detailing the history of Italian American women. The source provided a brief snapshot of the Italian American woman’s experience and the history of Italian American women, summarizing this long history in a couple of paragraphs. I used a single quote from the source to aid my subpoint about the cultural significance of John A.’s other, Ann Ainardi Sobrato.

Santa Clara University’s $100 Million Gift from John A. And Susan Sobrato Launches Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation at Santa Clara University article was written in 2017, when SCDI was built. It discusses the motivations behind SCDI as well as its functions. The source goes into great depth about Sobrato’s funding of the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation and what the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation is meant to be used for. Most importantly for my project, the source explains why SCU and Sobrato’s investment in SCDI reflects Jesuit values of learning the natural sciences, developing a multidisciplinary education, and solving the world’s problems.

Accessed 14 Mar. 2024.

Santa Clara University’s article, Sobrato Family Gift Offers a "Home" at Santa Clara for Cristo Rey Students, provided much information on the Sobrato Family Scholarship Endowment and Sobrato’s support of Cristo Rey Jesuit High Schools. The article was especially useful in explaining why Sobrato’s philanthropic work reflects his Jesuit values. Also, I was able to find a photo of a student recipient of Sobrato’s scholarship, which was a nice addition to the section.

Accessed 14 Mar. 2024.

Saum’s article provided information on plans behind the Sobrato Campus Discovery and Innovation. The article was especially helpful in providing quotes about SCDI from Sobrato himself, which is a primary source in the context of my project. The article contains explanations from relevant people on why the building enhances Jesuit values, which was important for my section, “Jesuit Values.”

Sobrato Organization. "John Albert Sobrato?" Sobrato, www.sobrato.com/people/john-a-

sobrato/. Accessed 14 Mar. 2024.

Sobrato’s profile on the website gave a broad overview of Sobrato’s early life and career and his current philanthropic work. The Sobrato Organization’s website was helpful because everything was written on behalf of Sobrato, thus counting as a primary source.  The Sobrato Organization website helped me find all of the different boards that Sobrato was a part of in the San Francisco Bay Area and all of the clubs and organizations he was a member too, which helped me carry the point that he “treats the SF Bay Area like his famiglia,” overseeing its institutions like a father.
