Influential Italian Americans: A.P. Giannini
Introduction
Born in 1870 in San Jose, California, Amadeo Pietro Giannini, also known as “A.P.,” was a monumental Italian American figure in the early American banking system. In 1904, the Bank of Italy was founded in San Francisco, California, by Giannini. This was only the beginning of a banking empire. As the son of Italian immigrants, Giannini developed a great dedication to his community and those around him. Unlike most powerful figures at the time, Giannini was an advocate for “the little fellow” and dedicated his career to providing services to ordinary people, small businesses, and immigrant communities. “A.P. earned the affection and loyalty of devoted friends, business associates and employees with his warm personality. He had an intense desire to succeed and to enable others to excel. While his public benefactions were legion and well published, many other people quietly benefited from his energy, kind spirit and generosity(A.P. Giannini Foundation).” His early commitment to his community highlights his belief that a thriving community is the backbone of economic success. By offering small loans and personalized banking services, Giannini transformed the banking industry, offering a sense of trust and opportunity never seen before.
