This map illustrates the different indigenous tribes that populated California pre-colonization.

About

This section of California History highlights the indigenous history of California and follows the progress of the first people. My aim is to take you on a journey through the history of California and the treatment of those native to the land. The main 3 stops on the voyage reflect the most important ideology of this – colonialism.

How to Navigate

The first section discusses life for indigenous tribes pre-colonization, covering the background of the main tribes in California. Each subsection illustrates what life was like for the tribes of that specific region, delving into topics like diet to modes of transportation.

The second section covers the beginning of colonization and its impact on indigenous tribes, following a timeline from the first mission ever built in California to the Gold Rush, a monumental event in Californian History. Each category has an italicized section that updates us on the number of indigenous people present. From there, a map takes us into the state of California and depicts each country's rule over California, from Spain to Mexico, to the current U.S. Accompanying this is a more extensive timeline, detailing more critical events, not just the areas of colonization.

The third section follows a post-colonization account of indigenous people of the present day. It offers some interviews as well as historical information about current issues that indigenous populations are experiencing or have experienced in recent years.

Through this journey, the aim is to answer the research questions:

1. How did colonization affect indigenous populations up to the Gold Rush, in which California experienced immense growth of people?

2. What was the experience of the native populations post-colonization?
