The National Organization for Women was formed in 1966 by several famous female Second Wave Feminists such as Betty Friedan, Pauli Murray, Shirley Chisholm, and Muriel Fox. The organization was founded as a grassroots organization to promote the feminist ideas of the Second Wave of Feminism. The organization provided a structured, organized platform to actively campaign for women's rights on a large scale, focusing on issues like employment discrimination, the Equal Rights Amendment, and reproductive rights, effectively pushing the movement towards tangible legislative goals and broader societal change. One of NOW's primary goals was to secure the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), a constitutional amendment guaranteeing equal rights for women.
