Melting Pot and the American Identity

What is a melting pot?

A melting pot is defined by many people from around the world immigrating to one spot and creating what's called a melting pot. It's when all these diverse cultures come and create a homogenous identity that shapes America today.

This cartoon published in 1887 shows the xenophobia towards Italian immigrants.

This melting pot has created what America is today. Italian immigrants made significant contributions to the economy through careers in construction, manufacturing, and other jobs in industrial sectors. Not only did this help the economy, but it also built America. The melting pot brought new cultures and traditions. Many cities in America celebrate traditions specific to Italy. Italian immigrants have enriched American society with their music, religious practices, and food. Though this seems great, not everyone has agreed with it throughout the years. Xenophobia was seen throughout the years towards Italian immigrants. This prevented Italian-American families from embracing their traditions. Assimilation was pushed onto them to change their culture and traditions to 'fit in' with the dominant society. A new culture was formed, an Italian-American culture that was a mix.
