Letter From German Soldier Walter - 1944
This letter is from Walter, a German soldier that was stationed in La Rochelle on the day of the allied invasion at Normandy. Walter wrote this letter for his family when he heard about some rumors that the English had landed on the beaches of Normandy. However, he was confident that the English would be quickly pushed back which could have been blind confidence or he might have stated this to not bring panic to his family as he quickly changed the subject asking how things were back home.
Walter shares the same desires that a lot of German soldiers were starting to feel around this time and that was the desire to go home. In his letter Walter jokes about how everyone wanted to be promoted home and he also states that the effects of war must be getting to some of his colleagues who are much closer to the front lines. Around this point in time is when German morale for soldiers and civilians really starts plummeting as it is when everyone is already tired of war and its consequences plus it is when Germany really starts losing massive amounts of ground which ultimately leads to their defeat in WWII (Walter 1944).
